William J. Crowe graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1947 and earned an M.A. and Ph.D. from Princeton university. A submariner, he was senior adviser to the Vietnamese navy Riverine Force and in 1973 was promoted to rear admiral. In 1980, he was promoted to admiral and was Commander-in-Chief of the Allied Forces Southern Europe. In 1985, he served as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, a position he held until he retired in 1989. Crowe served as ambassador to the United Kingdom from 1994...
